  • Andes is the longest mountain range in the world.
  • It stretches from north to south along the western coast of South America.
  • It is approximately 7,100 kms long, 200 to 800 kms wide, with an average altitude of 4,000 meters.
  • It originates in Venezuela to the north and then crosses Colombia, Ecuador, Penu, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina, to the southern tip of the continent.
  • It has a varied biodiversity and consists of many species including guanaco, Titicaca water frog, giant coot, flamingos, etc.
  • Machu Picchu, an Inca site on a peak on the easten edge of the Andes is a popular tourist attraction.
  • The Amazon basin is at the base of the Andes.
