ZIP Code
- ZIP Code is a system of postal-zone codes and stands for “zone improvement plan”.
- In 1963, it was introduced in the U.S. to improve mail delivery and sorting capabilities.
- The original code consists of five numbers.
- It corresponds to the postal codes used in most countries in the world.
- The first three identify the state and portion of the state, and
- The last two a specific post office or zone.
- In 1983, a nine-digit code was introduced to further speed delivery.
- It was created by adding a hyphen and four digits.
- The first two added digits specify a particular “sector,” and
- The last two an even smaller “segment” (e.g., one side of a city block).
