APJ Abdul Kalam
- APJ Abdul Kalam (Oct. 15, 1931 – July 27, 2015) was a renowned Indian aerospace scientist and statesman who served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007.
- Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was born in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu.
- After graduating from the Madras Institute of Technology (MIT), Kalam played a leading role in the development of India’s missile and nuclear weapons programs.
- He planned a program that produced a number of successful missiles, helping earn him the nickname “Missile Man.
- His significant contribution to India’s nuclear weapons program made him a national hero, especially after the successful nuclear tests in 1998.
- Dr. Kalam was also the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, holding the rank of a Cabinet Minister, from November 1999 to November 2001.
- In 2002, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government nominated Kalam to succeed outgoing President K.R. Narayanan.
