  • National Youth Festival is an annual gathering of youth in India.
  • The festival is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of youth icon Swami Vivekananda.
  • It is organized by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, in association with one of the State Governments.
  • Thus, it is organised in a different state each year during National Youth Week.

Objectives of the Festival

The basic objectives of the NYF are

  • To bring the youth of the country together in an attempt to showcase their talents in various activities,
  • To cover almost all socio-cultural aspects of life, and
  • Providing an opportunity to amateur young artists to express themselves.

National Youth Festival, 2022

  • The festival will be organised in Puducherry from January 12 to 16.
  • It is likely to draw around 7000 youths in the age group of 18 to 22 from across the country.
  • Around 500 youths from Puducherry will take part in the event.
  • Those who are not vaccinated will not be allowed to participate in the Youth Festival.

  • This year festival will be organised in the Puducherry Technological University has been chosen as one of the venues to conduct this festival. The entire campus of the University has been brought under the control of the Puducherry administration. Accommodation for the youth will be provided in hostels at the University.

  • Its aim is to propagate the concept of national integration, brotherhood, the spirit of communal harmony, courage and adventure amongst the youth. This aim is achieved by organizing gatherings of youth and encouraging them to take part in different activities.

  • The festival started in 1995 as a major activity under the programme held by National Integration Camp (NIC).

  • January 12 marks the Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. The day is always celebrated as National Youth Day. The week commencing from this day is known as National Youth Week, which is from January 12 to January 16.
